Arizona to Continue Use of Private Prison Systems Despite DOJ Policy Change

It may come as a surprise to many Americans that approximately 12 percent of incarcerated individuals are house in privately-run prison facilities - all of which have a lackluster safety record and are considered dangerously overcrowded. Following a recent string of inmate deaths and severe injuries in private facilities, the Obama administration recently announced its plans to gradually cut ties with the for-profit prison system. However, not all jurisdictions (like Arizona) are necessarily on board with the phase-out.
